Pricing Legal Services in the Era of AI: The Real Challenge

The future of legal pricing isn’t really about AI.

It’s about judgement.

Over the last few weeks, I’ve been exploring how generative AI is challenging traditional approaches to pricing legal services.

As AI reduces the time required to complete many legal tasks, the longstanding link between time and price is coming under increasing pressure. Clients can see it. Law firms can see it. The market is beginning to respond accordingly.

Yet despite years of discussion about value pricing, fixed fees and alternative pricing models, many firms still face the same challenge…

…the more I work with firms, the more convinced I become that the real issue is not a lack of pricing models.

It is a lack of pricing consistency.

Most firms already have people who are excellent at scoping work, managing risk and communicating value. The challenge is capturing that expertise, sharing it and applying it consistently.

Because ultimately, clients are not buying hours.

They’re buying confidence, judgement and outcomes.

The future of legal pricing will not be determined by AI alone.

It will be determined by how effectively firms combine AI, human judgement and pricing discipline to deliver the transparency, choice and certainty that clients expect.

That thinking is what led us to develop IntelliPrice®.  We’re still early in the journey but you can have a look at our website if this feels like something you’re grappling with and you want to be kept informed about developments.
